Explore BMW Warning Lights and Their Meanings

BMW luxury sedans, coupes, and SAVs have built a reputation on their long-lasting reliability. Still, your BMW 3 Series sedan or X5 SAV may someday require an unplanned visit to a certified BMW service center. There are several BMW warning lights on your dashboard to alert you to such a need, but what do they all mean? In this comprehensive guide, the service experts at East Bay BMW cover the BMW warning lights meaning to help San Francisco drivers better understand their car.

BMW Dash Warning Lights: What Do They Tell You?

BMW luxury vehicles are equipped with a lot of advanced systems, so there is a variety of BMW warning light symbols you might see illuminated on the dash from time-to-time. While some of these BMW warning lights alert you that your vehicle requires service immediately, others are just meant to serve as a reminder that you need to fill up your tires or schedule an oil change soon. Knowing the precise meaning of the BMW dashboard warning lights will help you to remain calm and determine the proper next steps when you see them appear:

  • Empty or Low Fuel: The empty/low fuel BMW warning light symbol pops up when you have approximately 30 miles to go before totally running out of gas. If you see this warning light, don’t push your luck: stop by the nearest San Jose gas station to fuel up.
  • Tire Pressure Monitor: This symbol alerts you when one or more of your tires needs to be inflated. If the light is yellow, the tire pressure is only down by about 10%. If the light is red, the tire is deflating at a rapid rate; you should pull over to safety and call for service so you don’t risk a tire blowout in Dublin. Paying close attention to your tire pressure monitor will help you get the most life from your BMW tires.
  • Oil Can: As you may presume, the oil can symbol means it’s time to schedule an oil change. At the East Bay BMW service center, we offer a convenient selection of service specials that often includes oil change coupons to help you save!
  • Light Bulb: Seeing a light bulb BMW warning light? This is telling you that one or more of your vehicle’s exterior lights require service or replacement. If you change the bulbs that are out and the issue persists, it’s best to consult a professional service technician for help.
  • Thermometer: An important BMW dash warning light, the thermometer symbol alerts you that the engine is getting too hot and may be at risk of overheating. An overheated engine can put you and nearby drivers in danger, and can cause costly damage. If you’re far away from any sort of auto service facility, it is recommended to pull over, stop your vehicle, and allow the engine to cool down, then set up a service visit as soon as possible.
  • Engine: When this warning light flashes or stays on, you will want to have your vehicle serviced immediately as it means there is an issue with your engine or its components.
  • Dynamic Stability Control: This symbol is merely informative and is nothing to fret about; it simply tells you when your car’s traction control system is engaged. To learn more about it, consult your owner’s manual or ask a technician.
  • Service Vehicle: Helping you stay on top of your BMW maintenance schedule, the Service Vehicle light will be yellow if your vehicle is due in soon. If it’s red, it means your vehicle is overdue for service.
