Where is BMW From?

You love cruising around San Francisco in your BMW vehicle, but have you ever wondered about the origins of your Ultimate Driving Machine? “Where is BMW from?” and “Where is BMW made?” are two common questions we receive here at East Bay BMW. For starters, BMW is part of the parent company, BMW Group, which is headquartered in Germany. It also owns other luxury brands such as MINI and Rolls-Royce. If you want to know more about BMW, read on with us below, or contact our team to start a conversation!

What is the BMW Group?

Is BMW German? Yes, it is! The BMW Group is known as BMW AG in Germany. What does BMW stand for? BMW stands for “Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengeselleschaft,” which translates in English to “Bavarian Motor Works.” The AG indicates that it’s a corporation, meaning it is owned by shareholders.

Who Owns BMW Shares?

The Quandt family is the longest and oldest shareholders of BMW AG and members of the family own about half of the BMW Group. The other half of BMW shares are divided between public shareholders. Some might even live around San Francisco! Here is the breakdown:

  • Stefan Quandt, 29%: A German industrialist and engineer
  • Susanne Klatten, 21%: Successful investor and the sister of Stefan Quandt
  • Public Float, 50%: This represents the rest of the shares owned by public investors

Where Is BMW Made?

If you’re curious about who makes BMW vehicles and where is BMW made, you’ve probably guessed that it’s not around San Jose. Is BMW a foreign car? BMW models are still manufactured mainly in Germany, so technically, yes. The largest BMW manufacturer is the facility in Dingolfing, but there are also BMW manufacturers in Austria, Great Britain, and China.

  • Germany: Landshut, Leipzig, Munich, Regensburg, Berlin, Dingolfing, and Wackersdorf
  • Austria: Steyr
  • Great Britain: Oxford
  • China: Shenyang

The BMW Group Production Network owns additional BMW manufacturer plants around the world. These BMW plants produce not just new BMW vehicles, but also genuine BMW OEM parts:

  • Mexico: San Luis Potosi
  • Russia: Kaliningrad
  • South Africa: Rosslyn
  • Thailand: Rayong
  • Brazil: Manaus
  • Egypt: Cairo
