When it’s equipped with the optional BMW towing hitch, the 2021 BMW X3 towing capacity reaches a maximum of 4,400 pounds. That’s more than enough to take an average-sized teardrop camper trailer out for the weekend, or a couple of dirt bikes or ATVs. The BMW towing hitch allows you to tow safely on any of the BMW X3 trim levels, but you’ll still need to configure your ideal powertrain based on other performance specs. Learn more about BMW towing features and explore your X3 powertrain options with East Bay BMW, below!

BMW Towing Features

BMW SAVs are equipped with numerous tech and performance features that lend themselves to safer, more confident towing in San Francisco. Even though the BMW X3 is a more compact model, it still manages to out-tow larger vehicles in its class with the help of these features:

  • Dynamic Traction Control
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
  • Brake Fade Compensation
  • Start-off Assistant
  • Brake Drying and Brake Stand-by
  • 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes
  • Dynamic Brake Control
  • Cornering Brake Control
  • Servetronic power steering assist
  • Rear-view camera
  • Active Driving Assistant

Additional features, like Surround View with 3D View and Active Lane Keeping Assist, are also available as an upgrade on the BMW X3 and can further enhance your BMW towing experience on San Jose streets. Of course, you also mustn’t forget to equip your SAV with the BMW towing hitch, which MSRPs at $550.

BMW X3 Powertrain Options

All of the BMW powertrain configurations are rated to tow with the available towing hitch. So, your decision will ultimately depend on the power and traction you desire when traveling through Dublin. Check out our breakdown of the available powertrains to make a well-informed decision:

2021 BMW X3 sDrive30i / xDrive30i

  • Power: 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque (2.0L TwinPower Turbo i4 engine)
  • Drivetrain: BMW sDrive rear-wheel drive or BMW xDrive all-wheel drive
  • Curb Weight: 3,931 pounds with sDrive or 4,147 pounds with xDrive

2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e (Plug-In Hybrid)

  • Power: 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (2.0L TwinPower Turbo i4 with Electric Motor)
  • Drivetrain: BMW xDrive all-wheel drive
  • Curb Weight: 4,586 pounds

2021 BMW X3 M40i

  • Power: 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque (3.0L M Performance TwinPower Turbo V6)
  • Drivetrain: BMW xDrive all-wheel drive
  • Curb Weight: 4,244 pounds

The greater your horsepower and torque output, the easier it will be to get up to speed when you’ve got a trailer in tow. If you plan to tow frequently or just want to have more confidence during the Bay Area’s rain season, you’ll likely enjoy the upgrade to a model with xDrive AWD.
